Lake County, the third most populous county in Illinois, is located in the northeastern corner of the state along the shore of Lake Michigan. It has a 2010 estimated population of 703,462, and is the second largest county by area in Illinois, with 444 sq. miles of land, and 935 sq. miles of water, most of which is in Lake Michigan. The remainder of Lake County has over 90 lakes. Lake County is adjoined by Kenosha County, Wisconsin; Cook County; and McHenry County. It was carved out of the adjoining McHenry County by the Illinois State Legislature in 1839. Naval Station Great Lakes is located in the city of North Chicago in Lake County. It is the U.S. Navy's Headquarters Command for training, and the Navy's only recruit training center. Lake County has 7 cities, and 45 villages with the city of Waukegan being the largest city, and county seat. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area, and has a population of 88,826, making it the 9^th largest city in Illinois by population. Waukegan is a blue collar town that formerly served as an important industrial hub within Chicagoland, the Chicago metropolitan area. Downtown Waukegan is the urban center of Lake County, and has plans for redevelopment of its lakefront where existing industry would be replaced by residential and recreational space.
