General information about Jasper County

Population: 37,718
Area: 730 sq. miles
County Seat: Newton
Area Code(s): 641
Time Zone: Central

Jasper County, founded in 1846, is named for William Jasper, a noted American Revolutionary War hero. The county is situated in the middle of the state and its county seat is Newton. [1] Newton is the most populous city in Jasper County, and its history is awash (pun intended) with the washing machine industry. After World War II, the Maytag Corporation located its headquarters in Newton, where it remained a leading appliance manufacturer until the early 2000s. Whirlpool acquired Maytag and closed the Newton plant in 2007. The legacy of the Maytag name continues in Jasper County, however. The Maytag Dairy Farm in Newton, started by the son of the appliance company founder, sells the award-winning Maytag Blue Cheese. [2] Now, green manufacturing and sustainable energy production are emerging industries in Jasper County. The county is bordered by Marshall County to the north, Poweshiek County to the east, Mahaska County to the southeast, Marion County to the south, Polk County to the west, and Story County to the northwest.
