The ninth largest county in Florida by population is Polk County with an estimated population of 686,483. The County was created from the eastern part of the adjoining Hillsborough County in 1861. It was named in honor of former U.S. President James K. Polk, who became President the day after Florida became a state in 1845. Polk County is bordered by nine counties, they include Lake County, Osceola County, Okeechobee County, Highlands County, Hardee County, Manatee County, Hillsborough County, Sumter County, and Pasco County. Polk County is located in the middle of "lightening alley," which has more lightening annually than any other region in the United States. The main industries in Polk County have been phosphate mining, agriculture, and tourism. The city of Bartow is the county seat of Polk County. There are 16 other municipalities in Polk County with the city of Lakeland being the largest city, with an estimated population of 108,054. There are 38 named lakes in Lakeland with a number of other unnamed bodies of water, mostly phosphate mine pits that eventually filled with water.
