Monroe County is the southernmost county in Florida. It includes main lands and the islands of the Florida Keys. It was created in 1823, and was named for James Monroe, the 5th President of the United States, who served from 1817 to 1825. The County is bordered by Collier County, Miami-Dade County, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Straits of Florida. It is the largest county in Florida by land area; however 87% of the county's land area is part of the Everglades and is virtually uninhabited. More than 99 percent of the county's population of 77,482, lives in the island chains. Monroe County is the home of conch culture. Conch comes from the sea snail that is native to the area. Sponge diving, conch diving, crabbing, and other commercial fishing have been important parts of conch culture and the county's economy. There are 5 municipalities in Monroe County. The city of Key West is the county seat, largest city in the county, is the southernmost city in the contiguous United States, and is the westernmost island connected by highway in the Florida Keys.
