Citrus County is a county located along the west coast of central Florida. The County was founded on June 2, 1887, and was named for the county's many citrus groves. Today, there is only one large citrus grove in the county. Citrus County adjoins Levy County, Marion County, Sumter County, Hernando County, and the Gulf of Mexico on the west. Citrus County includes a number of uninhabited and/or sparsely inhabited coastal islands. While some of the islands are state lands available for public use, many other islands are privately owned. There are 2 cities and 13 census-designated places (CDP) in Citrus County. The city of Inverness is the county seat of Citrus County. The city is located along the western shore of several lakes and has 330 acres of land reserved for passive and active park usage. Homosassa Springs, with an estimated population of 13,731, is the largest unincorporated community and CDP, in Citrus County. The community gets its name from the warm springs that attracts manatees to the area.
