Solano County is one of the oldest counties in California, founded in 1850 at the same time statehood was established. Located in the northeast section of the state, Solano County is also the easternmost county of the North Bay region. The county seat is Fairfield, home of Travis Air Force Base and equidistant between San Francisco and Sacramento. Fairfield is also the largest city in the county by area; the largest city by population is Vallejo. [1] The economy of the county is anchored by agriculture, forestry, service, and manufacturing industries. Agricultural production in Solano County is ranked 27th out of 58 counties in the state. Sudan grass hay is a leading crop (ranked 2nd in the state), followed by sheep and lamb production (ranked 3rd). [2] Solano County is bordered by Napa County and Yolo County to the north, Sacramento County to the east, and Contra Costa County to the south.
