Craighead County is a county located in the northeastern corner of Arkansas. This area was acquired by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Modern day Arkansas is part of what was known, at that time, as the Missouri Territory. This area went through a number of county divisions with Craighead County being founded in 1859 with land from Greene, Mississippi and Poinsett counties. Today, Craighead County is bordered by Greene County; Mississippi County; Poinsett County; Jackson County; Lawrence County; and Dunklin County, Missouri. The county was named for the 1859 Arkansas State Senator Thomas Craighead. Craighead County is home to an unusual geological formation, known as Crowley's Ridge, that rises 250 to 550 feet above the Mississippi embayment from southeastern Missouri to the Mississippi River near Helena, Arkansas. Craighead County is divided into 18 townships with 7 cities and 3 towns. With a population of 71,551, the city of Jonesboro is the largest city in the county, and is the county seat for the western district of the county. It is located on Crowley's Ridge, and is the cultural and economic center of northeastern Arkansas. The city of Lake City is located along the west bank of the St. Francis River, 16 miles east of downtown Jonesboro, and is the county seat for the eastern district of Craighead County.
