Originally named Cotaco County, Morgan County was formed in 1818 from land ceded by the Cherokee Indians. It was renamed in 1821 for Daniel Morgan, a Revolutionary War general. Morgan County's neighbors are Madison County on the northeast, Marshall County on the east, Cullman County on the south, Lawrence County on the west, and Limestone County on the northwest. Morgan County has two cities and five towns. Decatur, the county seat and largest city, is a port on the Tennessee River and is partly in Limestone County. Morgan County also has several unincorporated communities, and an actual ghost town: Lacon, a former brick manufacturing village that is now just a weekend flea market.
