• General Jurisdiction / Upper Courts


• District Courts - 40 courts. These courts handle the following case types:
• Civil - torts, contracts, and real property rights, small claims.
• Estates and mental health
• Domestic relations.
• Criminal felony and misdemeanor.
• Juvenile.
• Traffic.


• Limited Jurisdiction / Lower Courts


• Justice Courts - 139 courts. These courts handle the following case types:
• Civil - torts and contracts rights for claims up to $5,000, small claims.
• Misdemeanor and drunk driving.
• Traffic.
• Preliminary hearings.

Utah real and personal property tax records are kept by the Tax Assessor in each county.
 

Utah deeds and general document recording are handled by the Recorder's Office in each county. Records kept include deeds, mortgage documents, easements, powers of attorney, and liens.

The Office of Vital Records and Statistics administers the statewide system of Vital Records and Statistics by documenting and certifying the facts of births, deaths and family formation for the legal purposes of the citizens of Utah, participates in the National Vital Statistics Systems and responds to the needs of health programs, health care providers, businesses, researchers, educational institutions and the Utah public for data and statistical information.
