Courts in Maryland
- General Jurisdiction / Upper Courts
- Circuit Courts - one or more courts for each county in Maryland. These courts handle the following case types:
- Civil - Torts, Contracts, and real property rights for claims over $2,500.
- Civil - Estate, mental health, civil appeals.
- Domestic relations and divorce.
- Criminal felony, drunk driving, and misdemeanor.
- Juvenile cases, criminal and civil.
- Limited Jurisdiction / Lower Courts
- District Courts - one or more courts for each county in Maryland. These courts handle the following case types:
- Civil - Torts and Contracts to $25,000, real property rights, small claims.
- Criminal felony, drunk driving, and misdemeanor.
- Moving traffic, ordinance violation.
- Orphan's Courts - one court in most counties in Maryland. These courts handle the following case types:
- Estates. ( Howard and Montgomery County estate cases are handled by the Circuit Courts )
Property Tax Records
Maryland real and personal property tax records are kept by the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation.
Deeds and Document Recording
Maryland deeds and general document recording are handled by the Clerk of the Circuit Court. Records kept include
deeds, mortgage documents, easements, powers of attorney, and liens.
Vital Records
The Division of Vital Records of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene issues certified copies of birth, death, fetal death, and marriage certificates for events that occur in Maryland. The Division also provides divorce verifications. The Division provides information on procedures to follow for registering an adoption, legitimation, or an adjudication of paternity.
