Courts in California
Superior Courts - In June 1998, California passed a constitutional amendment that permitted the judges in each county to merge their superior and municipal courts into a "unified," or single, superior court. As of February 2001, all of California's 58 counties have voted to unify their trial courts. The superior courts on California thus cover all trial court matters. Property Tax Records
California real and personal property tax records are kept by the County Assessor in each county.
Deeds and Document Recording
California deeds and general document recording are handled by the County Clerk in each county. Larger offices have separate divisions for recording. Records kept include deeds, mortgage documents, easements, powers of attorney, and liens. Vital Records
Most county vital records in California are held by the County Clerk in each county. Birth and death records are restricted to the registrant, parent or legal guardian of the registrant. Some records can also be obtained from the California Center for Health Statistics .
