West Virginia Vital Statistics Directory

Vital records include birth, death, marriage, and divorce records. In West Virginia, birth, death, and marriage records are managed by the Health Statistics Center. Birth records are restricted, and therefore can only be obtained by the registrant (if 18 years or older), parent, legal guardian, spouse, children, siblings, mother/father in-laws, son/daughter in-laws, grandparents, or legal representatives of the relatives. Death records may only be obtained by the next of kin, or those with a legal right to the record. Marriage records are available from 1964 to present and may be obtained by the husband or wife, adult children, adult grandchildren, those with a direct and tangible legal interest in the record, or a legal representative of the authorized parties. Marriage records prior to 1964 can be obtained from the County Clerk’s office in the county where the marriage license was issued. Vital records requests from the Health Statistics Center are available by mail or in person.

West Virginia divorce records are managed by the Clerk of Circuit Court in the country where the divorce was finalized. Information can be obtained by contacting the Clerk of Circuit Court by phone, in person, or by written request.
