Vital records include birth certificates, death certificates, marriage, and divorce records. The Oregon Vital Records Office maintains all vital records. Requests can be made to the Oregon Vital Records Office for certified copies of vital records either by mail, internet, fax, or telephone. Although there is a statewide Oregon Vital Records Office, each county also has its own Vital Records Office which handles birth and death records. The Vital Records offices issue birth and death certificates, and maintain these records. Depending on the county, Vital Records Offices are either with the county clerk's office or the county health department.
The Oregon Center for Health Statistics can issue certified copies of birth, death, marriage and divorce certificates. The office has birth and death records dating from July, 1903, marriage records from 1906 and divorce certificates (not decrees) from 1925. Marriage license records may also be kept by the county clerk's office for the applicable county. Divorce records, including decrees, are found in the Circuit Court for the county where the divorce occurred. Some Circuit Courts have online access to court files where a search may be performed by party name.
Access to birth records is restricted for 100 years to the registrant, immediate family members, legal representatives, and individuals with special licenses. Access to death, marriage and divorce records filed in the Oregon Vital Records office is restricted for 50 years after the date of the event to family members, their legal representatives, and people/organizations with a personal/property rights, government agencies, or individuals with special licenses.
