The Vital Records Division of the State Center for Health Statistics, a division of the Department of Health, manages all birth and death records in the District of Columbia. Birth records are restricted for 100 years from the date of the birth. Death records are restricted for 50 years. During the restriction period the registrant, immediate nuclear family members, legal guardians, and legal representatives may access the birth and death records. Requests for birth and death records can only be made in person, by mail, by phone.
Marriage and divorce records are managed by the Superior Court where the marriage or divorce was finalized. Requests for certified copies of marriage and divorce records can be made by mail or in person to the Superior Court Marriage Bureau Section.
