California Vital Statistics Directory

The California Department of Public Health Office of Vital Records maintains and issues certified copies of birth, death, fetal death, and stillbirth certificates. The California Vital Records Office is managed by the California Department of Health Services. California is a closed records state, so only a select few individuals are allowed access to authorized copies of vital records including the registrant, immediate family members, spouses and legal representatives. However, California does offer the option of obtaining informational copies of vital records for the general public. These records contain the same information as an authorized copy; however, the document will state “Informational, not a valid document to establish identity.”

Birth and death records are available from 1905 to present. Requests for marriage and divorce records from the California Department of Health can only be made by mail. However, marriage records are also available through the County Recorder’s Office. Certified copies of divorce decrees must be obtained from the County Superior Court where the divorce occurred. The California Department of Health can only issue Certificate of Records for divorces occurring between 1962 through June 1984. Certificate of Records are not certified copies of the Divorce decree, it merely includes names of the divorce parties, the county where the divorce was filed, and the court case number.

Requests for vital records can be made by mail, phone, fax, internet, or in-person. However, certified copies of vital records can only be provided by mail or in person.
