The Alaska Bureau of Vital Statistics is responsible for managing vital records in the State of Alaska. Alaska vital records include birth, death, fetal death, divorce, and marriage certificate data, along with reports of adoption. Under Alaska law, all vital records are restricted. Birth records are restricted for 100 years, thus they will become public records 100 years after the event. Death, marriages, and divorce records are restricted for 50 years. For restricted records, requests for birth certificates can be made by the individual whose name is on the certificate, or by their parents; death certificates may be provided to a spouse, parent, child, or sibling of a deceased person; and marriage certificates may be provided to the married parties. After the restriction date passes, the vital records are available to be released to any interested party. All requests for certified copies of vital records must be made in person or in writing.
