Alabama Vital Statistics Directory

Vital records include birth certificates, death certificates, marriage, and divorce records. The Alabama Department of Public Health maintains and issues certified copies of vital records through the Alabama Center for Health Statistics. Vital records can be ordered via mail, in person, or online.

Each of Alabama’s 67 counties also has a Department of Health where vital records requests can be made. Birth records are available for immediate family members and anyone showing just cause for obtaining the record. Restricted access to birth records is available to immediate family members and anyone showing just cause for obtaining the records. Birth records are restricted for 125 years. Marriage and death records are also available to immediate family members and those showing just cause. Death records are restricted for 25 years. There are no access restrictions for divorce certificates, so anyone can obtain copies of this information. However, divorce certificates are only available from 1950. Divorce records prior to 1950 are located in the Circuit Court in the county where the divorce occurred.
